{"id":433,"date":"2017-06-12T19:15:28","date_gmt":"2017-06-13T02:15:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.n1rwy.org\/?p=433"},"modified":"2017-06-12T19:23:05","modified_gmt":"2017-06-13T02:23:05","slug":"cw-key-from-usb-mouse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.n1rwy.org\/?p=433","title":{"rendered":"CW Key from USB Mouse"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If any of you have become a amateur radio operator since the mid 90s- you might have found that the movement needed to work CW feels strange- yet at the same time- working a standard 2 button mouse feels natural.<\/p>\n<p>What are you to do? \u00a0Learn how to operate the left to right motion or find a &#8220;piano&#8221; style key that would mimic the movement of the standard computer mouse that we all use each and every day.<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to make a key out of an old mouse for several years. \u00a0I do a lot of remote operations and I didn&#8217;t want to bring a heavy key with me for the weight of the device and the fear of damaging the key with all the bouncing and thrashing around in my pack.<\/p>\n<p>I fully understand that this is a short term portable light weight cheap solution. \u00a0When you open a mouse you will find several micro switches. \u00a0This is what you will use for your \u00a0&#8220;dits&#8221; and &#8220;dahs&#8221; your CW tones. \u00a0You should realize that all switches will go bad at some point- and if that happens you might be able to replace one from the existing mouse- or you might have to toss the mouse and hit the local <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodwillaz.org\/location\/ellsworth-rittenhouse\">Goodwill store<\/a>\u00a0and get another one. \u00a0(I have used mine off and on for a few years and besides my poor fist- it is working as it should)<\/p>\n<p>So! \u00a0Let&#8217;s dive in!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_429\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.n1rwy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/img_8360.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-429\" class=\"wp-image-429 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.n1rwy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/img_8360-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Dell USB mouse\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.n1rwy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/img_8360-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.n1rwy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/img_8360-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.n1rwy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/img_8360-1240x1653.jpg 1240w, https:\/\/www.n1rwy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/img_8360-508x677.jpg 508w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-429\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Goodwill $2 mouse<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Dig in your technology junk drawer and pull out that old mouse that you threw in there. You know the one that didn&#8217;t work quite right but you couldn&#8217;t throw it away..We are not using the &#8220;tracking&#8221; section of the mouse- all we care about are they left and right buttons.<\/p>\n<p>Flip it over- remove the case screws and open it up.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.n1rwy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/img_8361.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-430 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.n1rwy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/img_8361-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Image of mouse curcuit board\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.n1rwy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/img_8361-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.n1rwy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/img_8361-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.n1rwy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/img_8361-1240x1653.jpg 1240w, https:\/\/www.n1rwy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/img_8361-508x677.jpg 508w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nYou will see the two micro switches used for the left and right mouse clicks as well as the &#8220;spare&#8221; switch that is connected to the scroll wheel (if your mouse has one) that could be used as a replacement if one of your switches start to go bad.<br \/>\nPull the mouse circuit board out of the mouse case and flip it over- here is where you need to make your solder connections.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_431\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.n1rwy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/img_8357.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-431\" class=\"wp-image-431 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.n1rwy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/img_8357-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Wiring the mouse switches for CW\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.n1rwy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/img_8357-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.n1rwy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/img_8357-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.n1rwy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/img_8357-1240x1653.jpg 1240w, https:\/\/www.n1rwy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/img_8357-508x677.jpg 508w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-431\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wiring the mouse switches for CW<\/p><\/div>\n<p>At this point- you disconnect the USB cable from the board and strip three wires. \u00a0 Then cut off the USB connector, and wire the same three cables to a 1\/8&#8243; or 1\/4&#8243; stereo jack (If using a Yaesu radio). \u00a0I had half of a radio shack stereo 1\/8&#8243; cable from another project so I just used that- but you can just use the resisting mouse cable if you have the stereo jack for the radio end of the cable.<\/p>\n<p>You will also notice that I broke the trace on the board at T13 and between the two switches- you will want to do this to isolate the switches from the rest of the mouse circuit. \u00a0I just scraped it with a utility knife. \u00a0 If you don&#8217;t do this, when you push both buttons at once it will throw the mouse into continuous key mode even after you release the switches- and you don&#8217;t want that.<\/p>\n<p>Use your VOM to find the two contacts to found the switch when you press it. \u00a0 Two of them will read zero ohms when the switch is pressed, then another combination will read zero ohms when the switch is not pressed. \u00a0You want the two that read zero ohms when the switch is pressed.<\/p>\n<p>One wire to the short tone one wire to the long tone, and the ground.
